Title Dhānyavatīpyākhana

Author Mahīndrasiṃha

Subject nāṭaka

Language Newari

  1. Here are some scribal slip in the paleography of this text. The word dhānyavati (Verso 32:3 ) is written as if dhyanyavati, lower part of vertical mark of dha has been written as of round mark of ya to touch with ā diacritic. There is special mark in between a and ā diacritic just below headline for Newari letter of gā, ñā, ṭhā, ṇā, thā, dhā, śā. Here it is there. So, the letter has been written dhā(nyavatī) here.
  1. There is scribal slip in the word durggā (Verso31:5) also. The scribe Daivajña Jayarudrasiṃha Bhāro has written the repha (r) of durggā as if vṛdhi au mark. The r mark has been written leftward instead of rightward. For being au diacritic Newari script needs e diacritic also which is not here. The diacritic e for ge, ñe, ṭhe, ṇe, the, dhe, and śe are different than other, which is likely a crescent and keeps before the letter . So, the word is read durggā here.
  2. There is assimilation of the graphic e/o diacritic and head mark with ‘to’ of madutora (Verso32:1) and makes confusion to be tā . But the curve stroke of e/o diacritic is seen a little at the head of letter t.
  3. The u diacritic of ru has been kept under as in other letters in Jayarundrasiṃha ( the scribe ) , opposite to the tradition of writing u diacritic at the lack of vertical stroke letter of r .
  4. The very first name Mahīndralakṣmīdevī ( in the text (ma)hindrarakṣmīdevi ) is worth noticing . She is the queen of Mahīndrasiṃhadeva, the king of Kathmandu. Rhodes and Gabrisch ( 1989 :286, coin no-308 ) records a suki coin of NS 838 ( A.D. 1718 ) with the legend “śrī mahīndralakṣmī 838 ”. As they did not find any other reference else where of Mahīndralakṣmī to be the queen of Mahīndrasiṃha, the authors presumed her to be the queen . Now , we have a record of it , but still there is not sufficient description. The prastāvanā portion of the nāṭaka is missing. Here queen Mahīndralakṣmīdevī`s name seems to have been mentioned by sūtradhāra.
